Operation Smile was founded in 1982 by Dr. William Magee and his wife Kathy Magee when they traveled to the Philippines with a group of medical volunteers to repair children with cleft lips and cleft palates. What they discovered was such an overwhelming turnout that they were forced to turn away the majority of those who sought help. The Magees saw the need and Operation Smile was born.

Since that fateful trip, the organization has grown substantially and spread to virtually all corners of the world.  With close to 200 medical missions per year, Operation Smile is responsible for one of the most impressive global efforts to advance health care in all of human history.  The organization’s message of hope continues to be a source of inspiration for medical professionals and the general public alike.
